The Captain’s steering wheel is always a central focus in every boat. So when looking to replace or upgrade your steering wheel, it’s important to consider the following criteria:
Size – The size of the steering wheel needs to be in proportion with the rest of the cabin. So check the diameter of your existing steering wheel to make sure you choose an appropriately sized wheel.
Material: polished stainless steel, aluminium, hard woods and soft grip synthetic materials are all popularly used on marine steering wheels.
Colour: Steering wheels with plastic covers commonly come in black, white or grey and are generally polished metal or grained hard wood for the spokes and rim.
Style: Nautical steering wheels generally fall into two style categories: traditional or modern. Modern styles are suited to sport boats and cruisers alike and traditional wheels are more prevalent on classic, sailing boats.
